Morning Yoga Routine to Ease Stiffness and Boost Energy
If mornings tend to greet you with a little stiffness (hello, shoulders… hi, hips… we see you), you’re not alone. A gentle morning yoga routine can help wake up the body, shake off lingering tension, and set the tone for a calm, energized day.
You don’t need a full 60-minute flow, incense, or a Himalayan sunrise. A quiet space, a few minutes, and your breath are more than enough.
Here’s a short, beginner-friendly sequence you can start tomorrow morning—your body will thank you.
Gentle Morning Yoga Routine to Reduce Stiffness
1. Seated Breathing (1 minute)
Give yourself at least 15 minutes for each morning yoga routine—this first step sets the tone.—this first step sets the tone.
Sit comfortably on your mat or at the edge of your bed.
Inhale through your nose for four counts, and exhale for four.
Let your spine lengthen.
Let your shoulders soften.
Release thoughts about emails, calls, commutes, or anything waiting for you later.
Just breathe.
Feel your heart rate slow.
Feel your body arrive.
This one minute alone can melt away a surprising amount of morning tension.
2. Neck + Shoulder Release (1 minute)
If there is any part of your body that needs a morning yoga routine, it’s your neck and shoulders. Here’s a great way to get them ready for the day ahead:
Slowly drop your right ear toward your right shoulder — slowly being the key. Your body is just beginning to move after hours of stillness, and your spine is transitioning from lying down to upright.
Breathe.
Switch sides, again moving with intention and without rushing.
Roll your shoulders forward a few times, then back.
These simple movements melt away screen-time stiffness, sleep-creases, and that “just woke up” tightness lingering in your neck and upper back. That’s what a great morning yoga routine is for.
3. Cat–Cow Pose (1 minute)
If you began this morning yoga routine on your bed, now it’s time to move onto your mat.
Gently come to hands and knees:
Inhale and gently arch your back (Cow).
Exhale and round your spine (Cat).
This simple sequence wakes up the spine, increases circulation, and lubricates stiff joints — the perfect way to ease your body into deeper movement.
4. Downward Dog Pose (30 seconds)
Press firmly through your palms, lift your hips, and gently pedal your feet.
You’ll feel your entire backside—from hamstrings to calves—start to wake up and open.
This simple move gives your morning mobility a major head start.
5. Crescent Pose — Low Lunge Stretch (1 minute total)
Step one foot forward and lower the knee of your back leg.
Lean gently into your hip flexor — your hips will thank you later.
Switch sides.
This stretch is especially helpful if you sleep curled up or spend long hours sitting throughout the day.
Breathe in, then gently hinge at the hips and fold your upper body toward your knees.
Let gravity do the work as your hamstrings and lower back begin to lengthen.
Keep a soft bend in your knees to protect your spine.
Once you’re in the fold, feel free to sway gently side to side with your arms falling towards the floor or cross your arms and let them hang in that position — this helps melt tension in the neck and shoulders.
When you’re ready, slowly roll back up to standing, one vertebra at a time, until you’re tall and grounded in Mountain Pose.
7. Mountain Pose (30 seconds)
Stand tall with both feet grounded beneath you.
Take a deep breath in through your nose, and exhale fully through your mouth.
Feel your body settle, your mind clear, and your energy rise.
You’re ready for the day.
